Synopsis
Mel is a colony builder. He's built colony sites on dozens of worlds across the galaxy- and all without ever leaving Titan City. All Mel and his coworkers have to do is sit down, slip on their headsets, and connect with one of thousand android bodies scattered across the stars. The android bodies are a marvel, near perfectly simulating human bodies- with extra strength and stamina as a bonus. Mel has worn a dozen android faces over the years, and he knows he's one of the best builders on his team. Then, Mel is assigned a female android body for the latest construction job, and it all comes crashing down. Piloting an android is being an android. For ten hours a day, Mel and his coworkers become the androids they use, and they feel everything the android shells do. Piloting a female android effectively means being a woman, and Mel is far from eager to sign up for that. But there are no shortage of construction workers, so it's put up with womanhood, or put up with unemployment. For a job lasting two weeks, Mel is willing to deal with a woman's body. It can't be that bad, right? But as the days pass and the colony grows around him, Mel begins to realize that many things are that bad- and some are even worse. The simple days of clocking in, building with his buddy, and clocking out for a beer are gone. Things are complicated as a woman; more complicated than Mel ever imagined. With strange new experiences and disturbing thoughts mounting all around him, Mel only knows one thing: the simple old days are gone for good. "A Perfect Body" is a science fiction novella involving human/android body swapping, galactic colonization, and self exploration.
