L. Neil Smith
A libertarian firebrand who built whole worlds to argue that freedom is the only frontier worth defending.
L. Neil Smith was an American science-fiction author and outspoken libertarian whose fiction was inseparable from his politics — in the best tradition of SF as a laboratory for ideas about how people might actually live free. His Hugo-nominated debut, The Probability Broach, imagined an alternate America where the Whiskey Rebellion succeeded and a stateless, prosperous society flourished.
That novel launched his North American Confederacy series and established his lifelong project: using parallel worlds, frontier settings, and brisk adventure plots to dramatize a fully realized vision of personal liberty. He also wrote in the Star Wars universe, bringing his own flavor to a galaxy far away.
Expect fast-moving, argument-driven SF with a strong point of view and a fondness for spirited heroes who don't much like being told what to do. Smith is a natural pick for readers who enjoy political science fiction worn on the sleeve — adventure that doubles as a passionate thought experiment about freedom.
