Gordon R. Dickson

A grand master whose grand design traced humanity's evolution across a sweeping future-history cycle.

Gordon R. Dickson was a celebrated and prolific Canadian-American author, a multiple Hugo and Nebula winner best known for the Childe Cycle — most famously its Dorsai military-SF novels, which follow a culture of elite professional soldiers. The larger cycle was conceived as an ambitious meditation on human evolution toward a more complete “ethical” humanity.

Dickson also had a lighter side, as in the comic fantasy The Dragon and the George. But his core reputation rests on intelligent, philosophically minded military and social SF, written with craft and conviction. Expect strong characters, big thematic ambition, and the disciplined heroism of his Dorsai warriors. For readers who like their military science fiction thoughtful — concerned with the why of conflict and the shape of human destiny — Dickson is a rewarding grand master to explore.
