Chris Bunch

A Vietnam veteran who poured real combat experience into rip-roaring military science fiction.

Chris Bunch was an American author and Vietnam War veteran whose firsthand knowledge of soldiering gave his military science fiction a hard, authentic edge. Much of his best-loved work was written in partnership with Allan Cole — most famously the sweeping Sten series, a space-opera saga following its hero from imperial underdog to galactic player across a corrupt, sprawling Eternal Emperor's domain.

On his own, Bunch wrote the Last Legion books and the fantasy Seer King trilogy, always with the same brisk command of action, tactics, and the gritty texture of life under arms. He understood chains of command, the boredom and terror of service, and the politics that send soldiers into the meat grinder.

Expect propulsive, battle-forward storytelling grounded in genuine military understanding. Bunch is a strong pick for readers who want their space opera muscular and their warfare convincing — a writer who knew what he was writing about and delivered the adventure without sanding off the cost of combat.
