Synopsis

" In 1847 there are few people living in Northern California, which is exactly why Henry O’Dell decided to settle there. An escaped mulatto slave with no tolerance for bounty hunters, Henry has been enjoying an obscure existence with his family for several years. Unfortunately, good times never last and Henry has contracted tuberculosis. Despondent, he’s considering ending his own life when he’s saved by a literal bolt from the blue. An unworldly vortex abducts him from 1847 and delivers him to a scientific institution in 2051. His health easily is restored by futuristic medicine, and Henry is soon anxious to return home. Unfortunately, Institute Administration would prefer to euthanize him, owing to the fact that he was recently supposed to have died. Richard Sayers, the compound marshal, is charged with keeping Henry contained until the final decision is made. Unconcerned by Henry’s growing desperation, Sayers ignores his request to help him meet Galen Fang, the Institute scientist who can get him home. When Henry learns of an Institute plan that will put his family in harm’s way, he reckons he’s been tolerant long enough. If they won’t send him home, he’ll find a way to get there on his own. "
