Karl Heimdall journeys from New Orleans to upstate New York, and the remote Victorian from which his parents vanished. No longer can he endure grieving over his father's desperate—and final—phone call wherein Terry claimed the house and landscape menaced by some unknown force, irrational and vicious. Karl soon confronts hostile presences, and a journal linking the enigma to his mother's fantasies.
