The deaths that occur along a stretch of the Mediterranean coast in France with bodies mysteriously mangled are attributed by legend to "the devils of Hérista". The source is eventually tracked to a woman who is a sort of evil mermaid, human in form but more like an elemental in function, a beast without a soul, an incarnation of the fascination and danger of the sea. A novel of brooding horror, a bit overwrought but with some nice touches.
