Fantasy / utopian novel set in 1950--a race of horses creates the Houyhnhnm State in Great Britain and pledges not to rest "until the whole Yahoo race is subjugated or destroyed." Excerpt from The Revolt of the Horses About 10 south of the Cape of Good Hope, in 45 deg. S. lat., lies an island which is conjectured to be about 150 miles long and 70 miles broad. The approach to it from the north is rendered extremely difficult by a number of parallel reefs of coral formation, which lurk treacherously at no great depth beneath the surface of the water. There are, however, a few narrow and tortuous channels, just deep enough to float a large boat of moderate draught. The beach, which is covered at high tide, consists of a broad belt of shining sand, or, rather, minute shells, of a rosy hue, beyond which basaltic rocks, varying from 40 ft. to 100 ft. in height rise sheer above the sea. The interior of the country presents the appearance of a vast park of gentle undulating surface, interspersed with groups of lofty forest trees, copses of flowering and fragrant shrubs, and rich parterres of flowers of every form and hue.
