Kelm, the leader of the ancient badger colony of the Great Sett deep in Circle Wood; is dead - Long Live Kelm! but his sealing at the Leaf Hold is to mark the beginning for Brek and Am of a mysterious quest in search of the legendary Moon-Piece. Is the Piece endowed with magic, are its powers those of life and death, or is the legend timeless to the needs of men ? In their crossing of the plains, river lands and mountain ranges, Brek and .Am are to discover many new and haunting realities of survival before their fate and that of the Moon-Piece is resolved - and before they come to know the part they must play in the shaping of the legend.
