Somewhere beyond time, the Kalevide, golden-haired King of Viru, stands watch at the Gates of Hell on the back of a snow-white mare. But legends proclaim he will return, in the nation's darkest hour, to vanquish the forces of darkness. The Kalevide, hero of the national epic of ancient Estonia, is a mighty figure of legend as great as Ulysses or Beowulf, Siegfried or King Arthur, a tragic hero who wrestled and chained the Lord of the underworld yet could not save those he loved from destruction. His saga is a monumental tale of magic and myth, warfare and wizardry, bloody deeds and great exploits. Now in a stirring modern rendition, the epic of the Kalevide is reborn.
