Synopsis

Twelve thousand years frozen. Four weeks to thaw. Halberg Vance is thirty-six, recently divorced, recently disgraced, and recently flown to the only winter posting his ruined career still qualified him for: four weeks alone inside the Greenland Exclusion Zone, a sealed 200-square-mile quarantine over a permafrost anomaly the Cooperative has been quietly burying since 1987. Catalogue the biomass. File the station log. Do not open the deep-storage chamber. A 1987 core sample has been dripping for thirty-six years. The climate has finally warmed past its containment threshold. It is nine feet tall. Six fingers per hand — the sixth longer, ending in a darker semi-claw — and where eyes should be there is only smooth pale-blue skin. It echolocates in clicks Halberg feels in his sternum before he hears them. Its capillaries glow pale-cyan in true dark. It bleeds clear meltwater. Its mouth tastes of mineral runoff and very old air. It has been waiting since the late Pleistocene to be warm. By Day 18 Halberg is not the warmest body in the chamber. By Day 24 the Cooperative is sending a helicopter early. The station log has stopped being honest. The closing scene is wordless. For readers of Sable Locke's FERAL, you'll be very into this. *Content warnings: explicit MM, size differential, multi-fingered partner, bioluminescent and ridged anatomy, captivity-as-being-thawed-toward, non-verbal consent grammar, isolation, register erosion, an ending that does not return home. 18+ only.* This book is not for everyone. It is for you.
