Dr. David Christopher Meenins is 800 years old and a channeled Longist named Clem, originally from Olduvai in the Larski system. When the exodus began, members of Clem's caste chose to stay behind for the destruction of their planet in order to strengthen the voice of the Dead while Longists sought their new home world. In race prophecy Clem also became Keeper of the Light. He must find the new resting place, the blue Mountains of Flint, for them. A blood feud has unfolded. Dr. Meenins has enlisted Lady Drasher, Elizabeth Tasgneganz, and Dr. Virgil Augustus Grammario to travel with him to a women-run monastery in the mountains, north of the Caucasus. There he hopes to view a guardian's ecstasy. The Longists send Linda Deemer to the monastery to help Clem reach full memory. Dr. Grammario reads from the analect of David Shanklen. He was held within their community as a zoo creature, then as a servant to Clem. Dr. Meenins resists his part in the new birth and gets separated from the traveling companions. He regains their company, however, after he has found the blue Mountains of Flint, otherwise known as the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina.
