Synopsis

It's AD 2055. What little remains of humanity has withdrawn into hermetically sealed "malls" in New York and Thailand. MOM-the mall operations manager-is history's most powerful computer. The shock of MOM's coming to self-consciousness induces a nervous breakdown in her at the same time she realizes that both she and the vestiges of humanity, who depend on her absolutely for survival, are facing imminent annihilation. Cisco Smith and Dee Zu, test pilots for Worlds UnLtd's generated realities, are two of four "vectors" who flee the disintegrating malls to converge from opposite sides of the planet to neutralize the threat. Despite her godlike nature, MOM needs their help in thwarting the last human mall operations manager, who is exacting revenge on the machine who made him redundant. In part, MOM is the story of how humankind-threatened with supersession by a vast machine intelligence-instead proves essential to a novel evolutionary emergence.
