Margaret Nesbitt, Britains most distinguished and controversial woman scientist, quits her post at Cambridge with a sensational farewell speech. She accuses Tharcher's government of "playing pawn in the Russian-American nuclear chess match. And pawns go first," she observes. She ridicules Reagan's Star Wars project as "just more macho toys." And she chides the "male chauvinist scientific fraternity" for ignoring her own research at the Bikini bomb test site, hinting that her findings might have offered hope of survival after "the war our politicians can very well bungle into." Finally, she announces that she will devote herself to finding the most famous survivor of all, the Loch Ness Monster. And she does! In a few short weeks Nessbitt's murky photo of that elusive beast splashes across international news media. The Russians are amused. The Americans curious. But the British are furious.
