Regis VII is on the brink of battle and the Merchants Guild sends hotshot troubleshooter Ruth "Blue" Varjax to help the Ibsts protect trade. After an earthquake destroys the capital city, Blue is given a powerful purple crystal by a mysterious Man of the Mist and sent on a journey of cleansing. She escapes just as feared holy leader Roche Etan invades the city.
