Synopsis

SAND HAS BEEN MOVING OVER IT FOR EIGHT THOUSAND YEARS. Wyatt Calder has been going alone first into chambers no one has seen for twenty seasons. Karst-hydrologist out of Lubbock, twenty months sober, recently divorced — he is the man you send into the dark before the rest of the team rappels in. When a joint Saudi-academic survey contracts him to map the limestone basement under the eastern Rub' al Khali, he expects fossil aquifers and a quiet payout. The mission's funding bought a different question: where is the lost city of Iram of the Pillars, the pre-Islamic Atlantis the desert is said to have kept? On Day 7 he hears a click in a chamber the cave should not be making. On Day 11 the passage behind him fills with sand-cement overnight and he is on the wrong side of a corridor that wasn't there yesterday. On Day 12 he walks into a chamber at minus eighteen-twenty meters and finds the body waiting. Nine feet two. Hematite-red plates from the nape to the coccyx, articulated like a scorpion. No eyes. A jaw line wider than human. Skin between the plates that goes silk-soft when his palm strokes down, and bleeds him when his palm strokes up. The cave is the body. The body is the cave. They have been alone for eight thousand years. The species is called al-Mufrad — the alone one — and the Bedouin elder camped at the surface knew its name before Calder was born. By Day 18, Calder chooses against the grain. By Day 24, the helicopter takes him home with the desert grown into the dermis at the small of his back.
