In 1959, Hicks penned his first children's book, First Boy on the Moon, which was dubbed Best Juvenile Book of the Year by the Friends of American Writers. From "About the Author", p. vi: "When the Soviet Union launched its first sputnik, Clifford Hicks' two young sons, David and Doug, wanted the answers to a lot of questions. The thought occurred to Mr. Hicks that man is moving so fast toward outer space that his boys might well make a trip to the Moon someday. Why not tell them what such a trip would be like? " First Boy on the Moon is the outcome of this effort. It explains the basic principles involved in space travel, along with some of what is now know about the Moon. It gives ample support to Mr. Hicks' feeling that any subject, no matter how technical, can be explained, at least in theory, in terms that are easily understood."
