A coward dies a thousand times, but a brave man's death is real! That, and "Never Volunteer" could have been Ryne Sangre's dual mottoes, but now that the Wholeth Empire was reaching out to annex the worlds of the Polar Cloud it was time for all able-bodied citizens of the Cloud to do their part to defend the home worlds - whether they wanted to or not! And since Ryne's superb reflexes combined with his instinctive tendency to do the right (i.e., cowardly, which is to say survival prone) thing when he was terrified had distinguished him in pilot training - he would be in the first wave of fighters to die gloriously for the Cloud.
